Make a Donation
San Diego County has historically been a very giving community. At Komen San Diego, we are well aware of your generosity. Each year when we hold the Komen San Diego Race for the Cure®, individual pledge collectors contribute more funds to the cause than any other source of revenue. Donations often go well beyond financial contributions. From bake sales, to quilting contests, to sporting tournaments, individuals give time, talent, and energy to the fight against breast cancer.
Thank you!
Remember, while at least 25 percent of the net funds raised locally goes to our National grant program, up to 75 percent stays in our community for education, screening and support services, such as providing free mammography for underinsured or uninsured women and education programs for at-risk communities.
When you give to Komen, you don't just give money, you give hope.
As you know, breast cancer knows no season. Each year the need for additional funds grows. While great strides are being made, more research must be funded and more support services are needed in our community. As we enter this new season, please continue our area's legacy of love. Make a donation today, using any of the methods highlighted in the left-hand column of the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where does your money go?
A: This is a very good question to ask when you are giving to a non-profit organization. The answer should be more specific than "to breast cancer research" or "to fight breast cancer". Susan G. Komen for the Cure is extremely careful how we spend the dollars you entrust in our care.
Nationally, we kept administrative expenses at less than 10 percent in our most recent audited financial statements. Mission-related activities, including grants and programs related to breast cancer research (22%), education (36%), screening (11%) and treatment (6%), accounted for more than 74 percent of total spending, or $96 million. (The remaining 25% were dollars spent for fundraising - 16% - and administration - 9%.) Eighty-two cents of every dollar raised is available to fund mission programs and services.
As evidence of our fiscal responsibility, Worth magazine named the Komen for the Cure one of "America's Best 100 Charities" out of more than 819,000 charities in the United States in 2001. Of the 26 health organizations named to the "100 Best" list; the Komen for the Cure was one of only two organizations solely focused on women's health.
Locally: up to 75 percent of the net funds stay in our San Diego service area providing screening, education, and support services. 25 percent goes to support the Komen’s Award and Research Grant Program. No local funds go to support the administrative and fundraising expenses of Komen National. Our administrative expenses were less than 15% in 2006, leaving more than 85 cents of every dollar going to mission programs.
Based on information gleaned from our Community Profile, we grant money to other breast health/cancer non-profits, educational institutions, hospitals, local government agencies. Instead of replicating infrastructures that already exist, we grant money to organizations that run programs or initiate new programs to work toward fulfilling the identified needs of our community via the community profile.
Since 1992, we have granted just under $5 million in San Diego County.
